Hasbro Retreats

Paramount/Hasbro announced they are moving the original release date of the movie sequel G.I. Joe Retaliation (June 29) to March 29, 2013 for 3D work. Speculation includes stiff competition (The Avengers, Dark Knight Rises), Battleship's domestic box office failure, and...really delayed for 3D? So much attention tied up with so much money. What about what the movie is saying? How it's defining our heroes/nation...how people react to adversity/tragedy...can we really look deeply into a summer action movie? I can analyze my own reaction, interpret meaning/signs I see, find meaning through codes and conventions (narrative, characters, set design, etc.)...or just be entertained while "unplugging" my critical thinking. Few people understand all the visuals, but everyone has opinion about visual culture, which is certainly the case here. Language has words, sentences and paragraphs while the film has the shot & editing, so any substantial criticism of the film itself will have to wait until March 29, 2013.
